Performance Opportunities

Clarinet EnsembleThe woodwind studios at Mississippi State University provide an intensive learning atmosphere where students interact with artist faculty and work toward the achievement of their fullest musical capability. Lessons focus on aspects of performance from orchestral and band to chamber and solo literature. Required studio classes feature topics ranging from the history of the various woodwinds to important new literature and performance techniques. Students also have the chance to perform and be critiqued by their peers. If you are challenged by high expectations and wish to reach your fullest potential, come join the excitement in the woodwind studios at Mississippi State University.

Woodwind Studio Information

Lessons: All Mississippi State woodwind students take lessons ranging from half an hour to one hour per week. These lessons focus on all aspects of performance from orchestral and chamber to solo literature.

Studio Class: In addition to the above, a monthly studio class is held during which students performances are critiqued by their peers. The studio class also discusses topics ranging from the history of woodwinds to important new works in the various woodwind literatures.

Guest Artists: Guest artists in various specialties visit the Music Department at Mississippi State University during the year. The guest artists often perform a solo recital in addition to master classes in their specialty area.

Woodwind Ensembles at State

Sax QuartetMississippi State University has several woodwind ensembles comprised of woodwind majors and minors. In addition, talented non-majors are invited to audition for the woodwind ensembles. These ensembles are a major part of the woodwind student's performance experience. The ensembles rehearse once a week and perform the finest literature encompassing a wide spectrum of styles including classical and jazz / popular idioms. The woodwind ensembles perform regularly both on and off campus each semester.
