Dr. Matthew C. Haislip joined the faculty of Mississippi State University in 2016. As Assistant Professor of Horn, he teaches applied horn lessons, chamber music, and ear training, directs the MSU Horn Choir, and performs in the Faculty Brass Quintet and as Principal Horn of the Starkville/MSU Symphony Orchestra. He also performs as 2nd Horn of the North Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and as 4th Horn of the Meridian Symphony Orchestra. During the summer months, he is a horn instructor at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp in Twin Lake, Michigan and performs as 4th Horn of the Missouri Symphony Orchestra’s Hot Summer Nights Festival in Columbia, Missouri. He serves the International Horn Society as the Mississippi Area Representative and the Media Reviews Editor for The Horn Call, the organization’s journal. Prior to coming to MSU, he taught at Washburn University, Calvary University, Hardin-Simmons University, and McMurry University. As a composer, his duet book, Dueling Fundamentals for Two Horns, was released in 2019 by Mountain Peak Music and has been praised by hornists across the world, including prominent faculty members at Northwestern University and the Guildhall School of Music & Drama (UK). His other compositions are published by WaveFront Music, BrownWood Publishing, and the International Horn Society’s Online Music Sales. His recent work, Night Music for two horns and piano, was performed at the 2022 Southwest Horn Workshop, 2023 Southeast Horn Workshop, and at Northern Illinois University.

Haislip is a founding member of Quintasonic Brass, a brass quintet comprised of former and current faculty members at Southeastern Conference universities. The ensemble was recently a featured guest artist at the Velikogorički Brass Festival in Zagreb, Croatia and has appeared at the 45th International Trumpet Guild Conference, the 2021 Jazz Trumpet Festival Brazil Online, and at such universities as the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, and Western Illinois University. Haislip has previously held the positions of Co-Principal Horn of the Midland-Odessa Symphony, Principal Horn of the Kansas City Civic Orchestra, and Assistant Principal/Utility Horn of the Kentucky Symphony. As a freelance hornist, he has performed with dozens of professional ensembles, including the Cincinnati Opera, Opera Naples (FL), Omaha Symphony, Chattanooga Symphony, Huntsville Symphony (AL), Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, Dubuque Symphony, South Dakota Symphony, Lone Star Wind Orchestra, and the Mississippi Symphony. He can be heard on recordings on the Albany Records, Kansas City Jazz Orchestra, and Mark Custom labels and has performed on 162 reference recordings streamed across 150 different streaming services with the Excelcia Wind Band for Excelcia Music Publishing, Wingert-Jones Publications, and RBC Publications. He has performed as a soloist with the Mississippi State University Wind Ensemble, Starkville-MSU Community Band, Angelo State University Wind Ensemble, and the Wills Point High School Band (TX).

He regularly performs and presents clinics at conferences and at universities across the United States, including appearances at the 53rd International Horn Symposium, Southeast Horn Workshop, Northeast Horn Workshop, Western Horn Workshop, Mid-South Horn Workshop, International Fellowship of Conductors, Composers, and Collaborators, International Music by Women Festival, the White Lake Chamber Music Festival, the Mississippi Bandmasters State Band Clinic, and the Kansas Music Educators Association In-Service Workshop. He has been a guest artist at such universities as West Virginia University, Western Kentucky University, the University of Memphis, University of Alabama, University of Louisiana at Monroe, and the University of Arkansas. His articles have been published online and in print in publications of the International Horn Society and the British Horn Society.

Haislip holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Horn Performance from the University of Missouri-Kansas City, a Master of Music degree in Horn Performance from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music, and an undergraduate degree in Music Education from Texas A&M University-Commerce.
