Mississippi State’s Music Department has been a leader in preparing teachers for the state and region since its beginnings in the 1950s. Our graduates seeking employment as educators have enjoyed a high job placement rate for many years. You can find our graduates teaching at various levels all across the country.

Hands-On Learning

Students in our undergraduate program receive opportunities to observe and teach in local school settings throughout their time as undergraduate students. Areas of concentration include instrumental, vocal, keyboard and guitar.

The Teacher as a Musician

As Music Education majors, students have the opportunity to study privately with our talented studio faculty and have access to world class large and chamber ensembles as they prepare for careers in education.

Our Family

Mississippi State is a comprehensive university with a Department of Music that is large enough to give you everything you need, but small enough to provide you with the individual attention students desire. Our faculty have many years of successful teaching experience at all levels of instruction. We hope you’ll come join us in the Music Education program at Mississippi State.

For Further Study

MSU's Master of Music Education program is both unique and practical, designed to fit into the busy lives of current music teachers. It is a hybrid program (a combination of summer and online courses) designed to support music professionals in the advancement of both their pedagogical and musical skills. Included in the degree is performance practice, conducting, pedagogy, curriculum, music theory, history, and the essentials of research in music education.
