Mississippi State University Solo and Ensemble Festival
NOTE: THE APPLICATION DEADLINE IS APRIL 22ND!
Date of the Event: Saturday, May 13, 2017
The Mississippi State University Department of Music will host its second annual Solo and Ensemble Festival on Saturday, May 13th. This is a great opportunity for middle and high school students to develop performance skills beyond the large ensemble experience.
MSU music faculty will adjudicate the festival and offer coaching for soloists and ensembles. Students will receive comments and ratings of I, II, III, or IV from the judges, or they may register for comments only. The judges will select several outstanding performances to be featured on a concert that will conclude the event.
The registration fee is $10 per student solo and $5 per student for each ensemble.
Students can enter the festival in three categories: Soloist, Ensemble, or Collaborative Pianist
Students who choose to perform as soloists must perform a solo with piano accompaniment. If the student chooses the solo for his/her instrument that is on our repertoire list, MSU faculty will perform the piano part for that student. Students who elect to play a solo not on our repertoire list must bring their own collaborative pianist (accompanist) and provide a published score for our coaches and judges.
Ensembles (duets, trios, quartets, quintets, etc.) may select any piece that works for their instrumentation, but must provide a published score for coaching and adjudication sessions. Also note on the registration form that there are limitations on the percussion instruments provided by MSU. Directors and students may bring their own percussion instruments, if needed.
Pianists who wish to enter the collaborative pianist category may bring their own soloist or can be assigned one by our faculty. If the pianist wants MSU to provide a soloist, they must perform the piece designated in our repertoire list. Students who plan to perform a piece not on our list and with their own soloist must provide a published score for our coaches and judges.
The registration deadline is Saturday, April 22nd.
