Dr. Bob assisted the Eupora High School Concert Band in their invited performance for the 79th annual Mississippi Bandmasters Association State Band Clinic on December 8th in Natchez, MS. Under the direction of MSU graduate Chad Hawkins, the band played a James Barnes composition entitled “Carnaval in Sao Paulo.” This composition was stylistically inspired by the samba music of Brazil. Dr. Bob talked to the students about the history and culture of Brazil and explained the significance of the title of the composition. He also provided samba percussion instruments for the entire band, arranged a Brazilian samba batucada percussion piece for them to play, and rehearsed with them so they could transition from the band piece into the percussion ensemble piece. Dr. Bob assisted in an encore performance of piece for the Eupora High School Band concert on December 19th in Eupora, MS. Dr. Bob and Mr. Hawkins first collaborated in the performance of “Carnaval in Sao Paulo” in 2004 which led to an article published in THE INSTRUMENTALIST journal: “Adventures in Samba with Carnaval in Sao Paulo” (September, Volume 59. Number 2, pp 38-44).
