Afia Walking Tree presented two class sessions for the MSU Music Department on November 3.  She taught students in the African American Music class about African music and history and the music of the African diaspora (i.e. Jamaica).  She also taught students in Planning & Managing Learning in Music Education about Jamaican music and the role of music as medicine.  Afia Walking Tree is a percussionist, spiritual activist, and empowerment guide.  She was born in Jamaica but is currently based in Oakland, California.  Afia’s guest lectures at MSU were arranged by Robert Damm, sponsored by the Music Department, and supported by the Holland Music For All foundation.
