Baba Asante

Baba Asante Nalls presented a djembe workshop on the campus of Mississippi State University on March 17.  Baba has a long history of learning from many djembefolas including Abdouli Diakité, Chief Hawthorne Bey, Ladje Camara, Mor Thiam, and Adama Drame.  Baba previously worked as a West African drummer in Chicago with the Muntu Dance Theatre, the Alyo Children’s Dance Theatre, Ballet Jiki and Alla Lakke. He teaches drumming, folklore, and culture from the countries of Senegal, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Sierra Leone, The Gambia, Mali, and Ivory Coast.  Baba Asante was assisted by Lisa Dunn, his djembe apprentice and partner in Mississippi Djembe, a teaching duo on the artist roster of the Mississippi Arts Commission.  The program was hosted by Robert J. Damm, Mississippi State University professor of music and director of the JEMBE DEN African drum ensemble in Starkville.  The 3-hour session included instruction about the djembe in Africa and techniques for playing djembe and dununba.  The workshop featured the drum rhythms of “Kakilambe” and an associated song.
