Beat the Stress

Dr. Bob facilitated a “Beat the stress away!!!” drum circle for residents of Herbert Hall on November 30th.  University students are sometimes overwhelmed with anxiety at the end of the semester as they prepare for final exams.  Drumming can be an effective in-the-moment diversion from the stress-filled activities at this time.  Group drumming has long been a component of healing rituals in many cultures throughout the world. Scientists are studying the effects of drumming which has been shown to reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.  Fast-paced drumming increases excitement and energy while slow-paced drumming induce a calm, meditative state of relaxation. Studies have shown that drumming lowers both blood pressure and stress hormones.  Drumming combined with deep breathing and visualization techniques offers even more stress reduction benefits.  Taking time for a one-hour recreational drum circle can be quite restorative. The “Beat the stress away!!!” program was arranged by Ryan Matijevich, senior resident advisor for Herbert Hall.
