Charlene Minor Sings Spirituals

Tuesday, October 4, 2016

Charlene Minor visited (on 9-27) students enrolled in Dr. Bob’s African American Music class to teach about spirituals.  She led the students in singing songs of sorrow (e.g. Nobody Knows the Trouble I’ve Seen, Sometimes I Feel like a Motherless Child, There is a Balm in Gilead, and Were You There?) and songs of joy (e.g. Every Time I feel the Spirit, He’s Got the Whole World in his Hands, This Little Light of Mine, and Amen).  The students also sang songs associated with coded messages (Follow the Drinking Gourd, Wade in the Water, Steal Away, and Follow the Drinking Gourd) which played a role in the Underground Railroad.
