The annual gathering of Mississippi's band directors is a wonderful opportunity for professional development, and faculty, students, and alumni from the Department of Music were very involved in the programming for this year's State Band Clinic in Natchez:

  • Six Department of Music graduates and one faculty member gave clinic presentations: Chad Austin, Ben Burge, Tamiko Bridges, Stephanie McArthur, Jill Wallace, Daniel Wade, and Elva Kaye Lance.
  • Alumnae Tamiko Bridges and Stephanie McArthur were inducted into Phi Beta Mu International Bandmasters Fraternity.
  • Alumnus Jerry Pickering is serving as the President of the Mississippi Bandmasters Association.
  • Alumnus DeMario Jefferson guest conducted the Starkville High School Wind Ensemble.
  • Faculty member Dr. Jason Baker performed as a soloist with the Starkville High School Wind Ensemble, performing Dr. Cliff Taylor’s Concertpiece for Marimba and Wind Ensemble with the composer conducting.
  • Faculty members Elva Kaye Lance, Barry E. Kopetz, Cliff Taylor, and Craig Aarhus conducted the MSU Wind Ensemble in the featured concert on Friday evening for all clinic attendees, directors, and guests.
  • A composition by alumnus Dr. Quincy Hilliard was premiered by the Starkville High School Wind Ensemble, and a commissioned composition by Dr. Cliff Taylor, Five Mississippi Rush, was premiered by the MSU Wind Ensemble.
  • And a special thanks to Dr. Jessica Banks for attending and leading the way with our department’s recruiting efforts!

We are proud to be associated with the MBA's State Band Clinic and appreciate the opportunity to be involved. We are also proud of our graduates and current students who contributed greatly as well.  Hail State!
