Mississippi State's Department of Health Promotion and Wellness and the Holmes Cultural Diversity Center sponsored a free study break event for students on Wednesday, April 24 (10:00 am to 2:00 pm). A drum circle facilitated by Dr. Bob of the Music Department, refreshments, and various fun activities which promote a healthy lifestyle were provided. Drumming has long been used in communities for celebrations, communication, and ritual healing. Research has found that drum groups can provide a means for empowerment and teamwork, togetherness, a feeling of belonging, and connectivity. Other research studies have demonstrated the health and wellness benefits of group empowerment drumming in reducing stress, improving mood, encouraging creativity, and even strengthening the immune system. The Study Break event was organized by Kim Kavalsky, Coordinator of Mental Health Outreach at MSU.
