Drum Circle for WELLNESS DAY

Monday, April 25, 2016

Dr. Bob facilitated an open drum circle on the MSU drill field in celebration of Wellness Day on April 20.  The event was a collaboration between the Department of Health Promotion and Wellness, Student Counseling Services, the Student Association, and the Music Department.  The event focused on positive ways of coping with stress and strategies for self-care.   Wellness Day centers included a coloring station, aromatherapy, temporary tattoos with positive affirmations, making a stress ball, a nutrition station, and an “Ask a Counselor” station.  The drum circle included an emphasis on in-the-moment drumming from fast and exciting to slow and meditative tempos.  The event was organized by Kim Kavalsky, coordinator of mental health outreach in the MSU Department of Health Promotion and Wellness.  Music major John Bowden assisted with the drum circle and commented “We drummed, we sang, we mediated, we danced, we connected, we healed, we laughed, and we had an awesome time expressing our own melodies in a single song.”
