Jeri Mangum

Dr. Bob brought a national event to the local community on August 29 by hosting a free Drum Circle and “Prayer Gathering for Unity” in Fire Station Park in Starkville.  The local drum circle hosted by Dr. Bob and one of his percussion students, Jeri VanWinkle Mangum, was one of more than 500 similar events registered online with Global Synchronized Drum Prayer.  The program featured Native American songs and prayers and in-the-moment drumming.  The drum is central to dance, song, and celebration in every culture.  According to national organizers, this event was the first ever of its kind, and may have been the largest synchronized drum circle of all time.  (Photo of Jeri VanWinkle Mangum playing her river cane flute by Ryan Phillips, editor of the Starkville Daily News).
