Music Theory Upper Division Proficiency Examination Information

The Mississippi State University Music Department will offer the three component tests of the Upper Division Proficiency Examination in Music Theory on Thursday, August 13, 2015, starting at 9:00 a.m., for incoming transfer students who have successfully completed at least three (3) semesters of music theory and musicianship skills courses, and for current MSU music majors who have completed at least three semesters of music theory but have not yet fully passed the examination.

The three component tests of the Music Theory Upper Division Proficiency Examination evaluate written theory, aural dictation, and musicianship skills, and they correspond to the final examinations given in Music Theory III and Ear Training III at Mississippi State.

The Music Theory UDPE determines readiness for the advanced theory courses of Orchestration and Form & Analysis, and is a graduation requirement of all music majors.  A passing score of at least 70% on the Written Theory Test, AND a passing score of at least 70% on the combined Aural Dictation test and Musicianship Skills Audition, is required.

Four downloadable documents regarding the Music Theory Upper Division Proficiency Examination are available by going here:

These include a Preparation Guide, a Written Theory Test Sample, a Musicianship Skills Rubric, and Musicianship Materials.  This last document, Musicianship Materials, should be practiced in the month before the tests are administered, using the Musicianship Skills Rubric as a guide.

The Written Theory exam for new and continuing students will begin at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday, August 13, 2015, in Room 112 of Music Building B. Musicianship Skills auditions for continuing students will be available starting at 9:30 a.m.  The Aural Dictation test for new and continuing students will be administered at 11:15 a.m. in Room 112 of Music Building B.   Musicianship Skills Auditions for new students will be available starting at 12:00 noon.

THERE WILL BE NO MAKEUPS FOR THESE MUSIC THEORY UDPE TESTS and the next opportunity to take them will be in December of 2015.
