The MSU Department of Music will offer the Upper Division Proficiency Examination in Music Theory on Monday, August 16, 2021, starting at 9:00 a.m., in Music Building C.
Composed of three component tests – written theory, aural dictation, and musicianship skills – the Music Theory UDPE is an MSU music major degree requirement, not an entrance exam, that also enables participation in certain advanced courses.
Incoming transfer students who have successfully completed at least three semesters of music theory and ear training courses, as well as current MSU music majors who have successfully completed at least three semesters of music theory and ear training courses but have not yet passed both halves of the Music Theory UDPE, are eligible to take these tests.
Students are urged to renew their aural, musicianship, and written theory skills over the summer.
More specific information, including musicianship proficiency materials, will be available by July 12th on the Music Department’s Music Theory Area website.
An overview of the Music Theory UDPE is available on the Music Theory Area website: https://www.music.msstate.edu/areas/theory/theory/
