Taylor and Baker to Premiere Marimba Concerto

Friday, January 6, 2017

The MSU Wind Ensemble will premiere a new work for solo marimba with wind ensemble at their annual Honor Band Clinic on January 27th in McComas Auditorium. "Concertpiece for Marimba and Wind Ensemble" was composed by MSU Associate Director of Bands Dr. Clifton Taylor and will feature Music Department faculty member Jason Baker as the soloist. This work was commissioned by Baker, who led a consortium of schools from Mississippi, North Carolina, and Michigan to generate funding. These schools will also have exclusive rights to perform the work during the coming year before it is made available to the general public. While composed for wind ensemble, the music is heavily influenced by jazz, fusion, and pop styles - making it a unique contribution to the repertoire for solo marimba. Dr. Taylor will guest conduct the MSU Wind Ensemble for the performance of this piece.
