CHORAL ACTIVITIES at Mississippi State University is a growing and vibrant area with opportunities for study and performance at all levels of experience. With four choral ensembles involving just over 200 singers, students are exposed to a wide variety of repertoire reflective of our global community and representative of the historical western music development. Past performances include collaborations with the Tupelo and Meridian Symphonies, as well as performances for state conventions. Recently, the most notable of these invitations secured performances on the most prestigious concert stage in the world, Carnegie Hall. On Easter Sunday 2012, in the famed Isaac Stern Auditorium, on the Ronald O. Perelman Stage, Dr. Packwood, and sixty MSU choral members, made their Carnegie Hall debut to a packed house.
Whether you are new to singing, a seasoned performer pursuing a degree outside of music, or one of our music majors, our ensemble experiences focus on promoting the musical growth of every choir member, thus reinforcing the importance of the arts in the enrichment of life. University students with previous experience singing in high school, college, or church programs are highly encouraged join one of the MSU choral ensembles, regardless of academic major. Placement in ensembles is made according to the level of experience, audition results, interest, and need. Typically, singers are expected to make an academic year (August-April) commitment to the ensemble, and many participate for several years and in multiple ensembles.
I invite you to learn more about the choral program, our upcoming activities, and each of our ensembles. If in the meantime you have questions, please contact us. Remember, “This is Our State” and Our State Sings!
