Dr. James Sobaskie

James William Sobaskie teaches Music Theory III and IV, Communicating About Music, Composition, plus Form and Analysis in the Department of Music at Mississippi State University.

Trained at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, Dr. Sobaskie taught at the University of Wisconsin campus in Stevens Point before coming to Mississippi State.

His research publications illuminate the music of Schubert, Chopin, and Fauré, and he has addressed music conferences in Belgium, Canada, England, France, Greece, Ireland, the Netherlands, Poland, and Scotland, as well as America.

Professor Sobaskie serves on the Editorial Board of Nineteenth-Century Music Review, which is published by Cambridge University Press in the United Kingdom, and is that journal’s CD/DVD Reviews Editor.  A member of the Comité Scientifique of Œuvres Complètes de Gabriel Fauré, his critical edition of that composer's piano trio and string quartet inaugurated the complete works monument published by Bärenreiter in Germany.

Dr. Sobaskie edited and contributed multiple chapters to Drama in the Music of Franz Schubert (2019) and to Gabriel Fauré: Influences and Influence (2026), both published by Boydell & Brewer in the United Kingdom. His next book is called Allusion and Transcendence in the Music of Gabriel Fauré.
