Dr. Phillip Stockton is Associate Teaching Professor of Music Education and Associate Director of Choral Activities at Mississippi State University, where he conducts the university's treble choir and chamber choir and teaches courses in secondary choral methods, conducting, and graduate music education. He holds degrees from Auburn University, Florida State University, and the University of Mississippi, earning a Ph.D. in Music Education with an emphasis in Choral Music.
Dr. Stockton has conducted choirs at the middle school, high school, collegiate, community, and church levels and has served as conductor for numerous honor choirs and festivals throughout the Southeast. An active conductor, clinician, and adjudicator, he has presented at state, regional, and national conferences of the American Choral Directors Association, the National Association for Music Education, and state music educator organizations. His clinical interests include treble choir pedagogy, adolescent voice change, conducting gesture, sequential musicianship instruction, and effective choral teaching practices.
His conducting experience extends internationally to England, Scotland, and Kenya, including conducting with Vox Anima in London and leading the Mississippi University for Women Chamber Singers in performance at St. Giles' Cathedral in Edinburgh. His research on adolescent voice change, treble choir pedagogy, and choral music education has been published in the Choral Journal and the Journal of Historical Research in Music Education.
In addition to his university responsibilities, Dr. Stockton serves as Artistic Director of Columbus Sings Messiah and Director of Music at Beersheba Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Columbus, Mississippi. He is an active member of the American Choral Directors Association and the National Association for Music Education and has served in leadership roles within the Mississippi ACDA.
Dr. Stockton is married to his wife, Amy, and they have two children, Lee and Molly.
