The MSU Philharmonia is comprised of both music major and non-music major string players. The group performs a variety of repertoire from the Baroque Era to Contemporary string orchestra compositions. The Philharmonia performs at least one formal concert per semester with additional paid performance opportunities available through the Starkville Symphony Orchestra to qualified students.

Students interested in participating in Mississippi State University Philharmonia Orchestra or Starkville Symphony Orchestra must complete a placement audition. Auditions will be held during the first week of every semester, and will take approximately ten minutes. Students from every major are invited to audition.
Musicians should prepare one repertoire piece that will show their strengths as a performer, a 2 or 3 octave scale, and will be asked to sight-read a short section of work from the upcoming concert season.
