Guest Artist Recital
Cellist Pablo Mahave-Veglia performs a program featuring two of the cornerstones of his instrument’s repertoire: the Bach Suites and the Études by Popper. Bach wrote his Suites by stylizing some of the popular dance forms of his time, both following the formal conventions, while also stretching the instrument to play both melody and accompaniment simultaneously. About 150 years later, Popper, mostly for pedagogical reasons, published his collection of 40 Etudes as a veritable compendium of the technical possibilities of the instrument. Bookending the program are the Sonata for two cellos by Barrière (featuring Amy Catron), and a work by minimalist composer Bill Ryan.
