Music Students Present at MSU’s Undergraduate Research Symposium

Bachelor of Music Education students Bryan Nguyen and Kathryn McArthur gave presentations at Mississippi State University’s Spring Undergraduate Research Symposium, which was held at Colvard Student Union on April 13, 2023.

Bryan Nguyen, who studies trumpet with Professor Anthony Kirkland, offered the presentation, “Insight into a Composer’s Process – ‘Hymn for the Northern Waters,’” before directing a performance of his composition.  It was played by MSU’s Trumpet Consort, whose members included Alexander Castellano, Brayden Green, Jennifer Kerry, Dr. Kirkland, Lillian Patriquin, Asher Roe, Ashton Stanley, and John Stewart.

Kathryn McArthur, who studies clarinet with Professor Sheri Falcone, presented her analytical investigation, “An Exploration of Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto, K. 622, in A Major,” which was visually and aurally illustrated to illuminate the structure of work’s third movement.

Mississippi State University’s Undergraduate Research Symposium is an annual event that showcases student inquiry and creativity at the state’s leading research campus, which has been categorized as a “very high research activity” institution by the Carnegie Foundation.
